Pearly Decade IV

This month marks exactly 10 years since the Your Heritage Foundation took over the care of the Temple of Art and Light: the Pearl. On this occasion, on July 13 at 18:00, we invite you to the show “Action Medea”, which is a part of the celebration of the pearly decade. 🤩

In the next posts we will mention some important people and events on the way from an abandoned, ruined Lutheran church to a multifunctional cultural arena.

When the Your Heritage Foundation took over the Pearl in July 2013, everyone wanted the reconstruction process to start as soon as possible. For the building, it was to be or not to be, because any delay in carrying out the works could result in the collapse of the roof and vault, which, given the unusual structure of the entire Pearl, would mean the collapse of the building.

The inner and outer ellipse of the Temple of Art and Light, on which the building is based, implies a specific, complicated roof structure. Tons of decaying wood created an unpredictable puzzle, where one wrong move during the work could cost dearly.

Juliusz Leonard Marcinowski, an outstanding architect of the old school, chairman of the Program Council of Your Heritage – Juliusz Leonard Marcinowski (on the left), took control of the situation in terms of design. Despite seven decades on the back of his neck, like a mountain goat he moved over the collapsing bowl of the dome, measuring, counting, checking. Combining the wisdom of the old school and the achievements of modern technology, he mastered the collapsing Pearl in terms of architect design.

However, this still needed real professionals who would be able to implement the reconstruction project. Here, a small family company from Żary came to our aid, selected as the contractor of the first stage of reconstruction by way of inquiries. The owner of the company – Jan Urszulak (in the middle), turned out to be a master whose craftsmanship and personal commitment to saving the Pearl helped us to solve the most difficult challenges we had to face during the reconstruction. Supported by Juliusz’s knowledge and the huge commitment of his own son, also a guild master – Marcin (on the right), he led to a quick and, above all, professionally completed stage 1 of works on the reconstruction of the Pearl’s roof. And many more stages in further years.

We worked with Jan continuously until 2021, when a serious illness took away this invaluable specialist from the project, and for our team – a man who turned from a contractor into a true friend. Rest in peace, dear Jan!
