Changes in the Temple of Art and Light

This season, we hosted so many cultural events that there was almost no time to mention the changes that have taken place in the Temple of Art and Light itself. ☺️ On the one hand, these are merely cosmetics for several years now, but on the other, they have been crucial both to the operation of the Pearl and to preserving its value as a historic monument.

The Marshal’s Office of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship has supported the transformation of the Pearl from a ruined Evangelical church into a Temple of Art and Light for another consecutive year. Thanks to a grant from the Lower Silesian Voivodeship Assembly, we were able to finance the replacement of the “northern” doors (on the side of the former sacristy) and the “gate” doors (on the car entrance side). This is a huge step forward in terms of the building’s appearance, which in these areas only had wooden technical doors. It is also a significant functional change, which in future years will allow Pearl Guests, or artists working there, to enter from completely different directions! Not to mention the “closure” of the building, which is crucial for maintaining its spatial integrity.

The only remaining defect was the internal door leading from the main building to the tower. This was once a fourth entrance, identical to the “cemetery,” “north,” and “gate” doors. When the tower was added in 1872, it became an internal door, connecting the original 18th-century elliptical space with the new bell tower. This door couldn’t be accommodated within the grant from the Marshal’s Office. Therefore, there was a good chance that the Styrofoam and plywood doors, which the TVP1 and Netflix duo had left us during the filming of “Erynie” series, would remain at the Pearl for months or years to come. However, friendly German foundations came with aid: the “Deutsch-Polnische Stiftung Kulturpflege und Denkmalschutz” from Görlitz, chaired by Dr Peter Schabe, and the “Erika Simon” Foundation from Görlitz, chaired by Ms. Waltraud Simon. Thanks to the funds they granted, this year not only the two missing exterior doors, the “north” and the “gate,” but also the interior door between the tower and the main space of the Pearl was restored, thus completing the entire scope of work on the door joinery!

Through the help of another friend of the Pearl, Krzysztof, the Temple of Art and Light received four powerful stage spotlights. It goes without saying how important proper lighting is in venues hosting theatre or music. During this year’s cultural season finale, four light “cannons” were already looking down toward the ground floor, and as dusk fell, two of them provided beautiful illumination for the stage and piano. Krzysztof – thank you so much!

Thanks to the support of local activist Tadeusz Łasica, the “northern” exit gained a missing step, and thanks to the efforts of the indispensable Bogdan, a member of the Your Heritage Club, the step was installed and the “cemetery” exit gained a threshold. Thank you, gentlemen!
