Pearl Cemetery

The Temple of Art and Light: The Pearl is not only a beautiful cultural arena, dressed in the patina of centuries that gives dignity and seriousness, or (currently in the arrangement stage) a green, flowery recreational area. It is also our Pearl Cemetery, which has accompanied the Pearl since the beginning of the 19th century, from which the spirits of the former inhabitants of Giersdorf look upon the new life of the Temple.

Since 2013, we have heard many suggestions and proposals as to what we should do with the cemetery. The most common was to remove the tombstones, level the ground and designate it as a park. A less radical proposal included collecting the slabs into one place of remembrance.

But… this cemetery is truly beautiful as a cemetery. Despite the destruction and devastation that has lasted for several decades. It is a link connecting the new life of the Pearl with its former descent into ruin. A kind of “memento mori” emphasising the transience of each moment – the hardest and the most beautiful. Death after life, silence after sound, peace after chaos. Winter giving rest to Autumn, but also Winter giving birth to Spring.

Do you like old cemeteries? Do you find them calming or inspiring? 🙂
